A real test, run live in your browser. No app, no signup — just your actual download, upload, ping and jitter.
For general browsing and streaming, 25 Mbps download is considered good. For 4K streaming or a household with multiple devices, 50+ Mbps is recommended. Most fibre packages in SA offer between 10 Mbps and 1 Gbps. Check what you're actually getting with a quick Speeder test.
Under 30 ms is excellent. 30–60 ms is good and playable. 60–100 ms is acceptable. Above 100 ms will cause noticeable lag. SA gamers playing on local servers typically see 10–40 ms. If your ping is consistently high, your router placement or WiFi quality is often the culprit — not your fibre line itself.
High jitter is usually caused by a cheap or ageing router, WiFi interference from neighbouring networks, ISP congestion, or a loose/damaged fibre cable. Jitter under 10 ms is generally fine. Above 30 ms will cause choppy voice and video calls. A wired Ethernet connection usually fixes jitter immediately.
Your speed test measures what reaches your device — not the raw line speed. Common causes of under-performance: your router is too far away; WiFi congestion on 2.4 GHz; the router firmware is outdated; or multiple devices are saturating the line. Testing over Ethernet (directly plugged in) isolates whether it's a WiFi issue or a genuine line problem.
Start by moving your router to a central, elevated position away from walls and appliances. Switching to 5 GHz WiFi on nearby devices helps with congestion. For larger homes or offices, a mesh WiFi system or a properly structured cabling solution gives consistent coverage in every room.
